Quintana of Foligno

Even this year, as for 71 years, Foligno is dressed for a party and competition thanks to the Giostra della Quintana.
The Giostra della Quintana, born in 1946 in Foligno, is a chivalrous tournament and a historical costume show that takes place twice a year: the evening of the second or third Saturday of June takes place the challenge carousel, while in the afternoon of the second Or the third Sunday of September is the rehearsal rally.
The city was divided into 10 autonomous ranks, each of which brought to the carousel a horse-knight binomio and was determined to play the challenge within the playground.
In addition, the historic procession was set up, involving as much folklore as possible.
To win this first edition, Sunday, September 15, 1946, of the recollected Giostra della Quintana di Foligno was the Rione Bianco Cross, thanks to GianLivio Sorbi riding Isabella.
The Campo race is the epilogue of the intense and spectacular event that lasts about two weeks.
It begins with the opening of the local taverns that are the heart of the districts.
Each ward has one and boys and girls in vintage costume welcome the visitors to their ward and not, serving Umbrian and folgland cooking menus.
It continues with many events involving the entire population.
One of these is the Exposition Fair, which, since September 1998, is an ancient market that was held until 1816 under the control of the papal state.
Here, seventeenth-century merchandise is depicted by period costumes, while musicians, firefighters and jugglers delight visitors.
The goods will be purchased only by paying with the coin of the period The Quattrino di Foligno, whose exchange is the depositary officer.

We then have the Convivi Racing, a culinary competition among the wards.
At the beginning he was named the Gara Gastronomica, then became the Convivi Racing. A true baroque banquet with the addition of music with vintage instruments and dances with antique costumes.
Jolliers and eateries cheer the evening.
Professors, gastronomists, sommeliers, and cooking academics are part of the jury that decides the prestigious victory.

There is also the “The Baroque Signs Festival”, a set of shows, musicals, theatrical, cinematic and baroque exhibitions.
The White Baroque Night is a blend of art, knowledge and fun that shows Foligno in all its beauty. Historical palaces welcome musical concerts and the square becomes a theater of spectacular baroque exhibitions, with dancers, living statues, musicians and saltimbanks. It is celebrated in the night between Saturday and Sunday of the first week of the September edition of the Giostra between enchantment and wonder.
During the Baroque Night, the Taverns of the Quintana Giostra Wards welcome the guests until late at night, with their typical gastronomy, animated by games, shows and music. The shops, restaurants and museums of the city remain open.
This event is dedicated to making Baroque and Neo-Baroque art known in all its shades.

Another event is represented by the drummers of the various wires that play and play in front of a jury.
The evening before the race, the streets of the city center sold invasion from the historical procession: the local representations parade in front of the populace by displaying the typical clothes of the Baroque period. The costumes, packed in the local tailors, are owned by the ward that takes them into the procession and respect in every detail the gorgeous fashion typical of the 1600 folignate. Each ward is accompanied by swordsmiths, trumpeters and drummers that make spectacular and enjoyable every moment of the parade. It is typical of the parade of the drumming of drums that resonates throughout the evening in the historic center of the city

Lastly, the Central Committee, ie Chairman, Vice-President and ten magistrates of the Board of the Envoy together with the Mayor and some councilors, withdrew. In this context, the gonfalone of the body and the city are also present. It joins the central committee the Madonna of the Carousel, the greatest example of the beauty of Quintana. This particular role has been entrusted to Federica Moro for years.
The following day, before the Race, the Court moves with a short ride to the Campo de li Games, starting from the Canapè Park.
At the end of the procession, in the square of the republic, a call for tenders is read, the knights are formally admitted to the challenge and receive the blessing of the bishop.

Finally, the starting order for the next day’s carousel is drawn.
The Giostra della Quintana is the most compelling and difficult carousel that takes place in Italy. This is called the “Olympics” of equestrian competitions. Each rider, for the occasion, assumes a “fake name”, a race name that identifies him: The Gagliardo for the Ammanniti ward; The Ardito for the Badia district; The Pertinace for the Cassero district; The Furant for the Contrastanga ward; The Fedele for the Cross White Cross; The Animoso for the Giotti district; The generous for the La Mora district; The Baldo for the Morlupo district; The Moro for the Pugilli district, the Audace for the Spada ward.
To win the victory and the Palio, each rider, on the horse, makes a path in the form of 8 of 754 linear meters delimited by a series of flags.
In the intersection of it stands a wooden statue, called Quintanone, representing the God of Mars.
In the right arm, lying on the outside, and under the tight fist, hangs the rings that, with a metal lance, have to be pushed by the knights riding the galloped horses.
The rings are of three different diameters: cm 8 for the first turn, cm 6 for the second and cm 5 for the third. The rider who in the shortest time and with fewer penalties will have made his run, will win the Palio.

Participating in this race is the dream of all the knights of Italy.

The Palio is the symbol of Victory and the Quintana’s Carousel revolves around it.
They are of various forms and are declined in the different languages ​​of contemporary art
The tense among the riders takes place in the stadium called “Campo de li Giochi”, titled Marcello Formica and Paolo Giusti: the forums that welcome people, citizens and top rankings
To win the win and then the stake, each rider must make the journey as shortly as possible avoiding knocking down the flags and attempting to take the ring using his own spear (2 jurors have the task of placing on the statue a new Ring as soon as the rider pulled him off).
Once the finish line has been reached, the rider must show the jury the three drawn rings. Each ring is worth 30 points, while each shot is 10 points penalty.
The maximum score on a single round is 90 points. All riders who did not score 90 points in the tournament are automatically excluded from the next.

At the end of the 3 rounds, there are times and scores of all the riders: the one who has scored the highest score in the least total time is proclaimed the winner of the carousel and his wrist is awarded a stake as a sign of victory
